AEK FC defeated 3-2 Brighton&Hove Albion in Falmer Stadium in a game of Matchday 1 of UEFA Europa League 2023-24 Group Stage.
It is one of the biggest wins in AEK history, the first victory in english soil since 3-2 at Derby County 47 years ago. It is a great story written by Matias Almeyda and his Doubles Winners!
Injury-hit AEK took the lead three times against one of the top Premier League teams. A header by Djibril Sidibe following a corner kick by Mijat Gacinovic in the 11th minute, a shot by Gacinovic in the 40th minute following a free kick by Ehsan Hadjisafi and a low shot by Eki Ponce in the 84th minute after an assist pass by Nicklas Eliasson drove AEK fans crazy.
Brighton equalized twice in the 30th minute and in the 68th minute with two penalty kicks given (via VAR) in favour to Joao Pedro and scored by him, but the Greek side had always one more word to say.
In the other game of the group, Ajax-Marseille 3-3. AEK are at the top of the group after the end of the first matchday.
