PROFILE \\

Matias Almeyda was born on December 21, 1973 in Azul, Argentina. He had a significant career as a football player, having played for River Plate, Sevilla, Lazio, Parma, Inter and Brescia, among others, while he wore 40 times the jersey of the National Team of Argentina.

In 2011 he retired as a River Plate player and took over as a manager in a difficult time for the historic Argentinian club, which under his guidance won the second division championship and returned to the top division of Argentina. In fact, he was awarded as coach of the year (2011-12) in Primera B Nacional.

In November 2012 he left River and in April 2013 took over CA Banfield, achieving the same goal: promoting the club to the first division as champion, winning once again the award “coach of the year” (2013-14).

The next stop of Almeyda’s coaching career was CD Guadalajara. Working for the Mexican club for three years, he won a championship (2017), two cups (2015, 2017), a super cup (2016), as well as the CONCACAF Champions League 2018, winning also the title CONCACAF Men's Football Coach of the Year.

In October 2018, Matias Almeyda decided to "move" to MLS taking over the technical leadership of the San Jose Earthquakes, remaining in the Californian team until April 18, 2022. In May of the same year he joined AEK FC.
