Today, April 13 it is the 91st anniversary of the birth of a great idea, of AEK Athens. The Club which was founded in 1924 to "accommodate" the athletes in Athens originated from Constantinople, was destined to become a national symbol and to gain international recognition, especially with its success in football and basketball.

A group of athletes from “Poli” after the big destruction of Asia Minor, wished to continue its activities, taking an historic decision 91 years ago to establish the Athletic Union of Constantinople. The first page of a great story was written in the sports store of Konstantinos Dimopoulos and Aimilios Ionas at 24 Veranzerou street in the centre of the Greek capital.

The founding general meeting was held on May 30, 1924 and the first Board had the following composition: President Konstantinos Spanoudis, Vice President Nikos Eleopoylos, General Secretary Costas Dimopoulos, Treasurer Timoleon Tagaris and consultants Menelaos Carotsieris and Miltos Ieremiadis. Later Fokion Demetriades also joined the board.

On July 7, 1924 the letter of recommendation of the Club was submitted to the authorities and as of September 18th of the same year, the Court of Athens acknowledged the establishment of the Association with the decision number 3844.

During these 91 years, AEK Athens won every title in Greek football, while the team has represented Greece internationally as few clubs did. But the other departments of the Club wrote golden history, such as the two more European titles of the basketball team, the Cup Winners Cup in 1968 and the Saporta Cup in 2000.

Gazing the completing a century of history, AEK Athens is ready to fly high offering again vision and hope to all its fans. The best is yet to come!
